Gaza’s Agricultural Sector Faces Catastrophic Destruction Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Developmental Agricultural Association expresses deep concern over the severe and ongoing destruction of the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip due to the war and continuous blockade. According to recent reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and UNOSAT, over 80% of Gaza’s cultivated land has been destroyed, rendering most farming areas inaccessible.

As of April 2025, only 5% of arable land remains usable. Greenhouse infrastructure has been critically damaged, with over 70% destroyed, especially in areas like Rafah. Furthermore, more than 82% of agricultural water wells are no longer functioning, exacerbating the irrigation crisis.

This collapse has led to a devastating food security situation. Currently, 93% of Gaza’s population is facing food insecurity, with around 12% experiencing famine-like conditions. The economic consequences are equally severe, with losses exceeding $2 billion, threatening the livelihoods of more than 560,000 people who depend on agriculture.

The Developmental Agricultural Association urges all relevant international and humanitarian actors to take immediate action to:

  • Restore access to agricultural lands
  • Rebuild irrigation and greenhouse infrastructure
  • Provide necessary farming inputs and technical support
  • Ensure protection and support for affected farmers, especially women and youth

We remain committed to supporting farmers through advocacy, emergency relief, and long-term recovery projects in partnership with local and international organizations.
